Freedom! From What?

JAMES GONNE

Freedom is such a terribly loaded idea. Whenever that word is mentioned, people assume and think of fireworks bursting over those East Coast fortresses, in which our separation from the British monarchy was won. Whenever we say freedom, that is certainly not what we mean. Freedom is to be unloosed from the shackles of worldly restraints. It is not to be free from the shackles of moral restraint, and certainly those are no shackles at all, but gentle guardrails.

Some Obvious Limits

Truthfully there is not much to say on this subject, besides perhaps to illuminate the basic points of morality by which any nationalist, or any socialist, would live. The nationalist lives for his country, he lives for the health and life of the men who stand beside him while protecting the land in which his kin live. The socialist lives for the benefit of the people around him, whether they be immediate family, or some very distant relation. These obligations end at our borders. Outside of our borders it has been decided not only by those within, but by those without, that we are different peoples, and that it simply is not possible for us to live in peace within one domain. Such is life upon the face of this earth, and though certainly you may say it ought not to be thus, so it is regardless.

What is Freedom?

Freedom is not escape from this simple reality, it is the acceptance of it, and the knowledge that we might build wonderful things within the confines of human immorality. The common misunderstanding is that socialism is based on the idea that people are good, and will share, and be generous, and be fair with all. Socialism is in fact based on the understanding that in the heart of every man is great wickedness, and the role of society is not to beat that animal out of him, nor is it to make him believe, incorrectly, that the animal does not exist at all. The point of Socialism is to accept the man in his average state, and to do the most possible good that is achievable given the natural and obvious limitations present. Whether or not he decides to participate in good faith in society at large is of no concern. Or course it affects us all, but it simply is not possible to cause a man’s heart to change. There is no tool which makes such a thing possible, and as such we do not chase after that pipe dream.

An Hopeful Dream

Freedom is that a man of decent character might wake up everyday to his family, and then to go do something of significance until his shift is up. Freedom is that he should come home and be greeted by the little hands of his offspring who love to see him returning after a day spent making sure that their future is secure. Freedom is not a casino. Freedom is not a dispensary. Freedom is to be cut off from those degenerate and horrible plagues which separate us from God, Nation, family, and even our own selves.
